Astronauts in training
Astronauts do not just climb into spacecraft and zip off into space - they need months of study and training first. They have to be in peak physical condition, and some astronauts claim their training is much harder than mission.Whatever it takes:-
Astronauts train for all sorts of situations. When necessary, they us real aircraft, equipment simulators, virtual reality system, and computer simulations.Underwater training:-
Floating in water is very like floating in space, so astronauts use special water tanks to train for space walks. One NASA tank can hold a full size replica of the space shuttle's payload bay.Walking on moon:-
At the NASA Lunar landing Research facility at hampton, virginia, USA, moon walking practice involves suspending the astronaut by heavy cables.Weightless wonder:-
Flown in a special way, an Aeroplane with no seats and padding walls help astronauts get used to feeling weightless. This plane is known as the ''vomit comet'' because its motion makes people feel sick. What's in your suitcase?
Just like you pack to go on holiday, astronauts pack lots of things to take into space. They wear different cloths depending on what they are doing.Ready to go:-
During launch and re-entry, astronauts wear a special bright orange suit, called a ''pumpkin suit''. Tools are stored in huge pockets on the legs.A peek underneath:-
For a spacewalk, astronauts need to wear an extravehicular mobility unit, or EMU. Underneath this, astronauts wear space underwear, a one-piece suit with small, water-carrying tubes that help keep them cool.Just pooping up:-
Extravehicular mobility units, or EMUs, are a bit like miniature spaceships. They provide astronauts with all they need to survive. They are used for working outside the space shuttle, and on the International space station.Living in space
A bed on the wall, baby wipes for a wash, footholds, and edible toothpaste! Life on a space station is very different from life on earth.Ordinary days:-
Astronauts need to do everything that you do. They eat, exercise, sleep, work, and play, but they have to do all these things in a home without gravity.New arrivals:-
When astronauts arrive at a space station, they bring supplies with them. Imagine trying to unpack your suitcase when you are floating!Keeping fit:-
Astronauts muscles don't work very hard in zero gravity so they quickly lose strength, so astronauts exercise for about two hours a day. This athlete completed a marathon on the international space station treadmill.Time for work:-
Experienced scientists regularly join the astronauts in space station to carry out a variety of experiments and recording the reasults.A tasty lunch:-
Food is supplied in sealed packets and some of it dehydrated. That means that water has to be added before the food can be eaten.Time for bed:-
Most of the crew use sleeping bags, which have to be strapped to walls of the space station. The bag holds astronauts arms in place. Otherwise they would float above their head.We like to clean, too!
Astronauts use combs and toothbrushes and toothpaste. But the toothpaste doesn't froth, and gets swallowed. Wet wipes are useful for a speedy wash.TO BE CONTINUED..........
